How to Maintain Sewer Lines

There are millions of home owners that wonder how to keep their sewer lines clean, and prevent a backup or clog in their sewer pipes. In this post we’d like to answer this question with some quick and simple tips and solutions.

How can I properly maintain my sewer line?

Limit Food Waste. The main way to maintain your sewer line is to refrain from putting any solid food down the drain and garbage disposal, including egg shells, fruit and vegetable rinds, pieces of food left over from meals, etc. All of that debris can gather in the sewer line and lead to a blockage and back up into your house. Dispose food waste into the trash.

No Greases & Oils. Collect cooking grease, fats, and oils into a tin and throw into the garbage.

Don’t flush bathroom supplies. Dispose solid waste such as dental floss, paper towels, diapers, disposable wipes and personal hygiene products in the garbage. Do not flush them down the toilet. Practice good sewer habits. Use septic-safe toilet paper or one-ply. Actually consider using cheaper toilet paper.

Flush the line periodically. Fill the washing machine, all tubs, and sinks full to capacity with cold water, no soap and then drain all at once. This causes a “flash flood wave” situation and can pick up debris in your pipes flushing into the sewer main. This simple process can potentially prevent a future backup in your pipes.

Consider a Plumber. If roots are present, periodically have the line professionally cleaned by a reputable plumber or drain cleaner.
